What It’s Like To Experience A Thrilling Hot Air Balloon Ride Over Marrakech

Last Updated on the 13th of May, 2024

Imagine silently gliding through the crisp morning air, high above the captivating landscapes of Morocco, watching the majestic Atlas Mountains and the rocky dunes of the Agafay Desert unfold beneath you.

A few weeks ago, while visiting Morocco for the second time, I had an opportunity to unleash my sense of adventure and create memories that will last a lifetime as I prepared to enter an extraordinary world of hot-air balloon rides over Marrakech.

After an hour’s flight where I witnessed the sun rise over the horizon while climbing 3000 feet above the ground, I stepped back onto the cobbly soil, carrying a piece of Morocco’s essence with me.

Are you curious about what it’s like to step into the basket, feel the heat of the flame, and embark on a thrilling hot-air balloon ride?

You should be!

So come along and let me tell you all about it.

Arriving in the dark at the launch point.

Hot Air Balloon Launch

Since the hot air balloon ride is a sunrise experience, it sets off in the early morning hours for you to fully enjoy the stunning sunrise colours that Northern Africa is known for.

As I travelled in the first weeks of spring when the sun rises later, instead of the “usual” pick-up time of 4.45 am, mine was scheduled at 6.30 am.

The launch point was about a half hour’s drive from Marrakech, towards the rising mountains, the Jibilat. We had stopped along the way to pick up other guests including travellers from Indonesia and the UK.

Before we soared high over the timeless Agafay Desert, we were welcomed with coffee, tea, juice and pastries which was nice given that most hotels don’t serve breakfast at this time of day.

Six of us grabbed some refreshments, clustered around and watched in awe as the glow of the propane lit up the faces of the men setting up the ride and then the magic of the balloon billowing and filling above us with its red and black stripes.

After the balloon was inflated and standing upright, we clambered in and were ready to find ourselves drifting above the bustling city of Marrakech.

Magic in The Air

”Get ready for the take-off” eagerly exclaimed our hot air balloon pilot before adding with a cheeky smile that it was his very first flight and he learned to operate it by watching YouTube videos.

As we gently left the ground, my legs trembled with excitement, but I was amazed by how light the balloon felt. For take-off and landing, we had to bend our knees, sit down and hold onto the straps, meaning we couldn’t see out of the basket.

Only once the captain told us to stand up, I suddenly realised that we were up in the air! I could see the lights of Marrakech city burning bright in the distance and then slowly fading as we silently moved toward the rugged mountains for sunrise.

If it is your first time flying, you may be wondering what to expect during a hot air balloon ride.

Well, it’s sensational. You are drifting over the surface of the earth, relishing every moment of being airborne all while having unobstructed 360-degree views, allowing for breathtaking photographs.

Did you know that the pilot cannot steer the balloon and it will drift with the breeze once it is in the air?

Taking in the quiet serenity of the hot air balloon experience in Morocco.
With the clear skies, I could see the landscape for miles around me.

However, It’s Not Over Yet

After the ride, you get to refuel with a Berber breakfast held in a traditional Moroccan tent consisting of Moroccan pancakes, and boiled eggs teamed up with salty olives, mint tea and fried doughnuts.

We had plenty of time to relax, enjoy our breakfast and chat about the ride. The tour ended with the vans taking all the passengers back to their hotels.

This was a fantastic experience and truly one of the most memorable moments on all my travels. The wind was gentle, the sky was clear, and the team who ran the day were super friendly and I felt a sense of freedom and exhilaration as we floated.

I sincerely hope that my post has convinced you to put the unique experience of hot air ballooning in Marrakech on your wish list.

*Fun fact – landing happens by reducing the amount of hot air that is in the envelope.

How much do Marrakech hot air balloons cost?

If you are looking into Marrakech hot air balloon prices, the best thing to do is to compare flights from different companies.

I know they might seem pricey at first, but keep in mind that pretty much everything – this goes for roundtrip transfer from and back to Marrakech, food and drinks, pre-flight safety briefing and the flight itself – is included in the price, and there are options for every budget.

Prices for a hot air balloon ride range between €170–€555 depending on the length of the flight, how far in advance you book and whether the tour includes additional amenities and experiences.

Booking a private tour will always cost considerably more, but you won’t have to share the basket or the space with other people – but the intimacy will cost you — be ready to pay up to €550 for the adventure.

    1. Many people think they would not enjoy a ride in a hot air balloon because they are afraid of heights. In reality, ballooning offers an opportunity to experience heights without fear. As the balloon travels with the wind, you feel no wind against your face– it is a serene, peaceful experience! Thanks for stopping by, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

    1. That’s what happened to me when I visited Marrakech 5 years ago, too. Much to my horror, I was chased by a shopkeeper, snake charmer and a local just for – allegedly- taking photos of them which I wasn’t. Therefore, this time, I was surprised to learn that most of the shopkeepers have changed their tactics and are welcoming visitors to take photos and post them on social media as a means to attract more people to their store. Thanks for stopping by, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

  1. What a great experience Aiva. This is certainly a good way to get a new vantage point on the world. We took a sunset balloon ride on our 10th anniversary and drifted over golden fields being harvested, bouncing through tree tops. Our biggest fear was leaving our 1 year old son in someone’s care, wondering if we would stay safe. Here we are nearly 37 years later. Happy Monday Aiva. Allan

    1. That’s fantastic, Allan. I am glad to hear you’ve been on a hot air balloon ride to mark your 10th anniversary. There’s truly nothing like the magic of a hot air balloon ride – they are a once-in-a-lifetime experience as you soar over the majestic mountains and take in the stunning scenery. In Marrakech, only children who are older than 8 can go on the adventure of a lifetime, so it was too early for the girls to enjoy the ride. Thanks for stopping by, and have a good day. Aiva xx

    1. It is a big costly – hot Air Ballooning is an experience that is on many people’s wish lists, but the price often raises eyebrows and is one of the reasons why they don’t go ahead and book a ride. But given that Hot air balloon rides provide memories that last a lifetime, it’s so worth it. Thanks for stopping by, and have a good day. Aiva xx

  2. How lovely! I didn’t take a hot air balloon ride in Morocco, but I did take it in Cappadocia, Turkey. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t very ideal that morning, so we were only up in the air for 20 minutes before we had to descend: it was about a 190€ ride for 20 minutes, haha. No regrets, though! Definitely a magical moment to be sailing in the air and seeing the world from below!

    1. From what I’ve heard, the hot air balloon ride in Cappadocia is another bucket list-worthy travel experience. I am sorry to hear that the weather wasn’t the best to discover the charming and breathtaking place as well as the surrounding landscape. One of the reasons why I went ahead with the balloon ride – apart from craving adventure – Marrakesh is famous for having the clearest sky and the purest air in Morocco meaning it would allow me to fully take in the scenery like never before. Thanks for stopping by, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

    1. Thanks so much. We had perfect weather conditions for a take-off that day and a wonderful opportunity to enjoy one of the best sunrises I’ve ever seen. I don’t have a fear of heights but was still nervous about going 3000 feet up in the air. In the end, it turned out to be one of the most relaxing and serene experiences. I hope you get to do it one day. Thanks for stopping by, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

  5. I read this and hit the like button last night, but just as I was about to comment, the husband put Would I Lie to You? on the television. Do you get this British comedy game show in Ireland? I absolutely love it. Anyway, it distracted me from writing how beautiful your balloon ride looked. We did something very similar in Albuquerque, New Mexico, several years ago, so I get how magical the experience is. I hope that wasn’t my last hot air balloon ride, nor Morocco yours!

    1. I haven’t heard of Would I Lie to You, so had to look it up. Sounds like a brilliant TV show to watch especially as it involves people revealing embarrassing facts and outrageous lies, not to mention Rob Brydon hosts it. When I lived in Edinburgh, I got used to watching English movies and TV series – it’s easy to get caught up in addicting American dramas, but sometimes there’s nothing better than a really good British TV show.

I very much enjoyed the hot air balloon ride. There’s nothing like gliding through the sky in a massive floating vessel while enjoying the sunrise and good company. I find that one of the best ways to enhance my perspective is to see a new place from above. Thanks for stopping by, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

  8. Wonderful….
We were lucky enough to enjoy the experience in Tanzania many years ago… booked it as a surprise for the morning of Stephen’s 16th birthday – I don’t know how I managed to keep my mouth shut – I was so excited myself!! We had to tell him the night before – to prepare him for the early start and he had to sign a disclaimer…
It truly is an amazing experience and while it’s certainly not a cheap adventure, its just one of those things that will create so many good memories …. and to those above who mention fear of heights – I’m the worst in the world – a complete chicken – and I was fine!

    1. Thanks for sharing your experience of going on a hot air balloon flight in Tanzania. What a fantastic and memorable way to mark your son’s 16th Birthday, Marie. Nothing comes close to rising high above the earth for a picturesque view of the surrounding landscape – whether you are sweeping over treetops or floating above a river or lake. I am pretty bad when it comes to reaching heights, too, but much to my surprise I was fine.

When I was looking for a hot air balloon flight in Morocco, I stumbled upon many companies offering flights in other parts of Africa including Tanzania and Serengeti National Park. Can you imagine silently gliding over wildlife and spotting lions, zebra, wildebeests, gazelles and, if you’re lucky, elephants off in the distance? I certainly have plans to hop in a basket one more time. Thanks for stopping by, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

  10. I so enjoyed your description of the flight! What an amazing place to balloon. I took a balloon ride many years ago that went over the foothills of the Rocky Mountains just west of Denver. It was magical! I was surprised how quiet it was, except for when the pilot turned on the heat a bit, and that there was no sense of movement. As one who doesn’t usually like heights, it was a great way to float above it all.

Thanks so much, Ruth 🙂 It was an unforgettable, one-hour-long flight where the balloon climbed up to 3,000 feet allowing us to get views of the desert, the snow-capped Atlas Mountains and the surrounding Berber villages. Once the balloon started to rise, the world and time seemed to come to a stop. Riding a ballon in Colorado where the Mountains are big, bold & beautiful sounds like something I would immensely enjoy, too. Thanks for stopping by, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

Hot air balloons are great fun. They are also very interesting to watch as the way they float up into the sky is nothing short of amazing. As this was my first time flying, I very much enjoyed aerial views of the landscape from above and experiencing hot air ballooning with a friendly group and a fantastic pilot. I find that fostering a positive relationship with other bloggers can often lead to beautiful friendships, meaningful conversations and human connections – just don’t write something generic, like “nice post” or “cool story.”  That’s a dead-end comment that won’t invite bloggers to react or reply.
